2 young people killed, 4 injured in overnight Durham shooting on Eugene Street

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Six young people were shot overnight and involved in a car crash in Durham, according to Police Chief Patrice Andrews.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. on Eugene Street south of Durham Freeway and about a block away from Burton Elementary School.

Police arrived in the area to find a black Hyundai SUV crashed into a utility pole. Two males in the car were dead; 3 females and 1 male were taken to the hospital.

Initial reports from Durham Police Department suggested that all six victims were under the age of 18. However, the department clarified at 7:45 a.m. that one of the men who died was 19 and the age of the other person who died is not known.

The 4 people injured in the shooting were all under the age of 18.

Burton Elementary School is on remote learning Monday. Durham Public Schools is expected to release a statement in response to the shooting later Monday morning.

Andrews said her officers continue to investigate what happened. The department will release more information when it becomes available.
