Raleigh, N.C. — Delays up to 85 minutes longer than normal were reported Tuesday morning on Interstate 40 West between Raleigh and Clayton.
A crash involving at least five vehicles was reported before 7 a.m. near Exit 303 for Jones Sausage Road. At least two lanes were closed, and backups extended for miles.
WRAL’s Brett Knese arrived at the scene and said officials were only allowing one car to pass the crash at a time.
Several cars had been towed by 8 a.m., but 85-minute delays were reported for drivers traveling between Exit 300 in Raleigh and Exit 312 for N.C. Highway 42 in Johnston County.
Multiple cars crashed into each other in the inside lanes of I-40 West near the concrete barrier. The crash occurred in a construction zone.
No significant injuries were reported.
As a detour, westbound drivers can get off I-40 at Exit 303 to avoid the delays.
Drivers can also take U.S. Highway 70 Business West to Hammond Road to rejoin I-40 West on the south side of Raleigh.
