Fireworks, food, fun: Tickets still available for Durham Bulls home opener

12 April 2022

— Tickets are still available for the Durham Bulls first home game of the season on Tuesday, which will include postgame fireworks.

As one exciting sports season ends in the Triangle with the Tar Heels in the men’s college basketball national championship game, another begins at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The Durham Bulls are set to open their home slate on Tuesday against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

There will be numerous festivities and promotions to celebrate, including postgame fireworks. The Holderness family, who live in the Triangle and have numerous viral YouTube videos, will be there for a ceremonial first pitch. Wool E. Bull will also be on hand to pump up young fans for the start of the season.

“There’s nothing better than the home opener,” said Bulls manager Brady Williams. “We’re looking forward to get in front of his home fans.”

For a manager in the minor leagues, Williams says, “Turnover is a positive thing.

“When you lose a bunch of players to the major league team or via trades or going to a different organization, it’s part of what we do. It’s a new group here and we’re excited to get these guys an opportunity.”

There are also several new foods offered at DBAP this season, including spicy-battered cauliflower (Ken Smith’s favorite), loaded sweet potato tater tots, green chile chicken taquitos, the ‘Cue dog, the pig kahuna (a teriyaki sausage with a pineapple-cilantro coleslaw and boom-boom sauce) and mini-churros.

Durham Bulls offer new twists, classic favorites to munch on this summer

First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. As of Tuesday morning, tickets were still available. The Bulls will be home through Sunday as part of a six-game homestand.

Weather-wise, things look great! Tuesday’s forecast calls for a high temperature of 82 with rain staying away.

The Bulls were named Baseball America’s 2021 Minor League Team of the Year after winning the regular season Triple-A National Championship title. The Bulls, boasting a lineup with MLB’s top prospect in Wander Franco, had the best overall regular season record among all 30 Triple-A teams. They finished the season 86-44 with a franchise-best .661 winning percentage.

The Bulls carry a 2-4 record after a six-game series with the Nashville Sounds.
