The Carolina Hurricanes trail the New York Rangers 3-0 on the road in Game 4, just a period away from seeing the series tied up at 2-2.

The first period was a diaster for the Canes, but it only resulted in a 2-0 deficit. It looked like it would stay that way headed into the game’s final period until the Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad scored 16:48 into the second stanza to put the Rangers up 2-0.

Just 4:25 into the first period, the Hurricanes faced their first power play, but they killed that one.

The game stayed scoreless until the 11:38 mark. The Rangers’ Jacob Trouba checked Max Domi in a way that Steven Lorentz took exception to, and the two of them got into it. Lorentz and Nino Neiderreiter each were penalized with Lorentz getting a total of 17 penalty minutes. Trouba was given five minutes for fighting but not for the hit.

The Canes killed almost all of the initial penalties, but Vatrano scored to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead not even seven minutes into the period.

During the Canes’ frustration with the call and still on the lengthy penalty kill, they started to get sloppier with the puck and one of those giveaways led to the Rangers’ second goal — this time by Adam Fox with less than five minutes to go.

The Canes still lead the series 2-1.
