I-440 reopens but delays remain in Raleigh after deadly pedestrian crash

20 April 2022

— A man died Wednesday morning when he was hit by multiple cars while walking on Interstate 440 near the Lake Boone Trail exit.

All westbound lanes of I-440 were closed between Exit 5 for Lake Boone Trail and Wade Avenue before 4 a.m. At 6 a.m., Sky 5 video showed traffic backed up two miles.

At 8 a.m., traffic was backed up at least five miles, past Wake Forest Road. The road reopened around 9 a.m., but heavy delays persisted in the westbound lanes as tow trucks worked to remove cars from the scene.

The drivers who hit the man stayed at the scene, police said.

Drivers can avoid the crash by exiting I-440 at Glenwood Avenue and picking up Edwards Mill Road to access Wade Avenue and I-440.
