Durham, N.C. — A man and a woman were shot in the early hours of Wednesday inside a Waffle House in Durham, and WRAL News talked to the rideshare driver who dropped the shooter off.
Multiple officers with the Durham Police Department responded to the restaurant at 3500 Hillsborough Road before 2:30 a.m. The location is open 24 hours, so customers and employees were inside at the time.
WRAL News spoke to Aiden White, a Lyft driver who said he unknowingly dropped the shooter and another man off at the Waffle House around 2 a.m. He said he picked up the shooter a couple miles away and took him to the restaurant.
“It didn’t need to escalate to that,” White said. “I mean, they’re grown men. They’re about my age. So, you would think they would be more responsible. It’s not worth it. That altercation right there could have been avoided.”
Before White drove away, he said he saw the man get into a fight inside the restaurant. A gun was pulled out, and he said four shots were fired.
A man and a woman inside the restaurant were hit by the gunfire and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
WRAL News is working to learn more about the suspect and the motive behind the shooting. Durham police called White back to the scene so forensics could take fingerprints from his car.
At 5 a.m., the scene was cleared, and cleanup efforts were underway.
White said he’s been driving for Lyft for over three years and 6,000 rides. He said he has never experienced something like this.
