New plans announced for luxury apartment complex at historic Seaboard Station

— The historic Seaboard Station in downtown Raleigh will be home to a 7-story, high-rise residential building with some local businesses inside.

New plans were announced by the developer, Hoffman & Associates, on Thursday, that show a bustling area for young adults to live, eat and shop. The first apartment building will be called “The Signal,” and developers said it was inspired by the project’s “unique historic location.”

The historic train station being torn down to build the high-rise apartment complex was built during World War II, serving Raleigh for decades before transitioning into a retail and dining space. Currently, Logan’s Garden Shop is in the space. The garden shop, which has been there for 30 years, is selling their property to developers and is moving to a new location in Raleigh.

Raleigh residents have long pushed back on plans to develop on one of the pieces of Raleigh history that remains in downtown, untouched by development.

“It would be tragic for [Seaboard Station] to be torn down and replaced by one more box with no soul,” one public commenter said during a public hearing in February. “No, this fine building should be the centerpiece of the new development.”

The Signal’s website does not say how much an average bedroom would cost per month, but it does feature many luxury amenities on par with other apartment complexes in downtown Raleigh that cost upwards of $1,700 a month for a studio apartment.

The first apartment complex to be built by Hoffman & Associates will feature 298 units, according to a press release sent out to media on Thursday, and it will be the first of three apartment complexes in Seaboard Station.

Seaboard Station will also feature an underground parking deck, according to developers.

The goal of this development is to be a pedestrian-friendly connector to “seamlessly connect” Person Street, Glenwood Avenue and William Peace University, the press release said.
