Durham, N.C. — Dozens of police responded to a shooting that left one person dead and another injured in Durham on Thursday afternoon.
The shooting happened in the 300 block of Avon Lake Drive at the Lakemoor Apartments.
Police have not released the genders or age of the two people shot.
Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews said a person of interest related to the shooting was barricaded inside one of the apartments.
“This is definitely one of those very active, evolving situations that might go a little while longer,” said Andrews.
Andrews did not release how the person of interest was connected to the shooting or the relationship to the two people shot.
“We don’t really know what this person has to do with the entire incident but we do know know the person is related to what has happened today,” said Andrews.
The person injured in the shooting was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Andrews did not release any information on the extent of injuries or the person’s condition.
Police were using witness statements to help find the shooter, Andrews said. She said that it was “too early” to determine a motive in the shooting.
“We feel very strongly this person of interest is connected with what happened today,” said Andrews.
Nearly two dozen police officers were seen at the apartment complex on Thursday.
