Police identify man accused of hitting cyclist, leaving scene after removing bike from under car

— Durham police are searching for a man accused of seriously injuring a cyclist in a hit-and-run crash last weekend.

Omari Newsom, 33, is charged with felony hit-and-run with serious injuries, felony conspiracy, driving while license suspended, failure to reduce speed and failure to stop at a steady red light.

Police said the driver of a gray or silver Volkswagen Jetta hit the cyclist while he was crossing the 2300 block of Guess Road at Ellerbee Creek Trail on Sunday. The cyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The driver left the scene after removing the bike from under his car, police said.

On Monday, Durham police released two photos of a Volkswagen Jetta driven by the suspect.
