Rangers even series with 4-1 win over Hurricanes in Game 4

Carolina Hurricanes 1
New York Rangers 4

The Carolina Hurricanes fell 4-1 to the New York Rangers on the road, and the series between the two is now tied 2-2.

Little went well from the time the puck was dropped on Tuesday in New York. It was 0-0 late in the first until the Rangers’ Jacob Trouba checked Max Domi in a way that Steven Lorentz took exception to, and the two of them got into it. Lorentz and Nino Neiderreiter each were penalized with Lorentz getting a total of 17 penalty minutes. Trouba was given five minutes for fighting but not for the hit.

The Canes killed almost all of the initial penalties, but Vatrano scored to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead not even seven minutes into the period.

During the Canes’ frustration with the call and still on the lengthy penalty kill, they started to get sloppier with the puck and one of those giveaways led to the Rangers’ second goal — this time by Adam Fox with less than five minutes to go.

The score stayed 2-0 for much of the third until the Rangers added an even strength goal to go up 3-0 with less than four minutes left in the second.

In the third, Teuvo Teravainen got the Canes on the board with a goal 6 minutes in to cut the deficit to 3-1, but five minutes later the Rangers’ tacked on another as Andrew Copp added an even-strength goal.

Carolina has scored just six goals in the series, including one in each of the last two games. The Hurricanes were 0 for 2 on the power play to fall to 0 for 9 against the Rangers.

“I am confident eventually they are going to find their way to the back of the net,” Carolina’s Sebastian Aho said. “We just have to find ways to score. We got to score on the power play.”

The Canes out-shot the Rangers 31-28, but goalie Antti Raanta allowed four goals on 28 shots.

Game 5 will be on Thursday night in PNC Arena.
