'Singin' it loud:' UNC's 1982 Final Four run was captured in songs

4 April 2022

In 1982, as the Tar Heels prepared to play for the national championship of men’s college basketball in New Orleans, songwriter Don Riis of Tennessee penned an ode to his favorite team.

“We’re going to Louisiana to bring home the number one crown,” it begins, words that resonate as the Heels again hope for a big win in the Big Easy.

“They were so popular, and it was really just about all you could talk about when it came to basketball,” Riis told WRAL News on Monday.

He says the words came naturally to him as a sports fan and a songwriter.

Forty years later, he listened again.

“It fits just perfectly! I couldn’t believe it,” Riis said.

When the Heels take the floor against Kansas in the Superdome, according to the song, “North Carolina gonna be there singin’ it loud, singin’ it proud.”

Riis is still a big UNC fan and has continued to follow the Heels through this Final Final run. He hopes this 2022 UNC team has the same fortune as 1982 and wins the crown again.

We wish them and all the fans and the university and everyone, we wish the best and we’re pulling for the Tar Heels for sure,” Riis said.

Of course, UNC won that 1982 championship, over Georgetown University.

WRAL commissioned a song to celebrate their victory.
