Durham, N.C. — Durham police report six young people were shot early Monday morning before their car crashed into a power pole in a Durham neighborhood. Two were killed.
Officers with the Durham Police Department responded to the intersection at Mathison Street and Eugene Street, a residential area near McDougald Terrace, around 3 a.m.
Chief Patrice Andrews said two young males, one who was 19, died at the scene. Police are working to identity the second male. Four others — three females and one male — were taken to the hospital. At least one is in critical condition.
There were multiple ambulances at the scene, and the street was blocked off.
The shooting does not appear to be random, police said.
Since the crime scene is active, nearby Burton Elementary School will be in remote learning on Monday, the police chief said.
Durham’s new mayor, Elaine O’Neal, was being briefed on the situation, police said.
