Your donation, tripled: Ways to help your neighbors on Giving Tuesday

30November 2021

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are behind us. Now, it’s “Giving Tuesday.”

Some organizations are tripling all donations made on Tuesday. Here’s a list of those and other ways to give.

At United Way of the Greater Triangle, which fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community, the team is focusing this year on supporting the community’s recovery throughout COVID-19.

When it comes to the specific needs in the Triangle, ending poverty is the goal, planners said. The United Way supports almost 100 nonprofits with that mission.

Two of the greatest needs in the Triangle include making sure people have access to affordable homes and food during the pandemic.

When you make a donation through United Way, you know it’s going directly to people who need help. According to United Way’s CEO, all the nonprofits that work with the organization are vetted for that reason.

“They are the grandfathers and grandmothers, the parents and the children, they are your neighbors, so don’t be shy on Giving Tuesday or year round,” said CEO Eric Guckian.

People may be giving less during the pandemic. Earlier this month, North Carolina’s annual Charitable Solicitation Report showed state-licensed charities received a total of $34 million in donations in the past year, which is $10.8 million less than last year.

On Giving Tuesday, you can also help with WRAL’s annual campaign, Coats for the Children. You can make a donation online or by sending a check to:

You can also drop off new or gently worn coats at participating Jiffy Lube locations throughout the Triangle.

Other ways to give

On Giving Tuesday, many organizations are matching donations to make your gift have an even bigger impact. Search your favorite local charity to make a donation online or see what items they need. InterAct, for example, needs donations of Target and Walmart gift cards, and the Durham Rescue Mission needs ham for its upcoming Christmas dinner.

For Giving Tuesday only, the SPCA of Wake County is tripling donations up to $50,000 to help more animals. Find a list of other ways to give here.
